Quarterlies Report & Analysis - October 18, 2006

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard development is one of the foremost topics we've been covering here on MOSR this year and the exciting features we've been reporting about are just the tip of the iceberg. Leopard build 9A283 is the latest developer seed release and we've been talking to the regular suspects about their experiences. (Cont'd)

When the battery ran down to nothing and reserve power cut out, this reporter left the loaner laptop on a desk and went down the hall to attend a meeting. Upon returning to the workstation, the Macbook Pro appeared to have turned off entirely -- the power light was off instead of "breathing" through its sleep-indicator brightness cycle. Normally this would mean that any unsaved work as well as the general state of the system would be lost and a normal boot from scratch would ensue upon pushing the power button.

Not so on this prototype Macbook Pro -- nor on any other Intel Mac our developer sources have tested this on! Instead of booting the system from scratch, upon pressing the Power button a blue screen appears and the last contents of graphics memory flash up on the screen for a moment while a strange-looking progress bar (unlike any other in Tiger or Leopard) moves from left to right across the bottom of the screen. Then, the system returns to the same state it was in before being put to sleep and having power run out -- without skipping a beat!
